Using camps to recruit parents

02/02/2012

We have produced a new area on Member Resources – Using camps to recruit parents: a guide. This has been designed to help leaders get more parents involved with supporting their child's section or group.

45% of new volunteers in sections come from parents, and camp is the most effective place to show them what Scouting is all about and retain their interest.

Ask for help

The most common plea we get from leaders is that they need more adults to help run sections. But many leaders don’t have the confidence to ask. This guide will offer support in how to approach this subject with parents. Taking a parent on camp is a proven way to inspire them and introduce them to the benefits of volunteering.

The guide includes a step by step approach, offering advice on how to involve parents before a camp, engaging them while at camp and the follow up conversations that can lead to a more regular offer of time from the parent.

Sign up and win

There is also the opportunity for leaders who plan to use camps to recruit parents this year to sign up for a regular newsletter providing more support and case studies. Those who register by 31 March 2012 will be in with a chance of winning an outdoor challenge badge course for 20 young people at one of our national scout activity centres (worth £1000).

I've followed the links on these pages and am more than a little alarmed that you are a long way in before there is a reference to CRB checks. Whilst I understand we must frighten possible volunteers, we must also keep a clear sight of 'knowing who they are'. CRB checks sooner rather than later is my philosophy.
