Kick off Diamond Jubilee celebrations in scout style
07/02/2012
Scouts mark Queen's Diamond Jubilee with special activities starting on Accession Day.
While the official Diamond Jubilee celebrations take place from 2–5 June 2012, scouts across the UK are starting to mark this special occasion for our patron, the Queen.
Masterful chefs
In Swindon, the 17th Swindon Scouts of Gorse Hill challenged teams from Penhill, Highworth, Stratton, Cricklade and Toothill to win the title of top chefs in a cooking competition. More than a campsite cook-off, the teams of four prepared a three-course meal for four people with a budget of only £15. Their equipment was also limited – just a grill and two gas burners! Just the sort of challenge scouts like to tackle.
Planting enduring memories
The 4th Dovercourt Sea Scouts joined forces with the Harwich Society's Bobbits Hole team to commemorate the Jubilee by planting an oak tree. After clearing an area of land, the teams planted a young oak that had grown from an acorn in the local area.

- The Scout Association has the honour of royal patronage due to a Royal Charter, granted by King George V in 1912 and subsequently supplemented by Queen Elizabeth II.
